This painting is inspired by the work of impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840 to 1926), in particular his “Regattas at Argenteuil” piece, painted in 1872. In his work, Monet sought to capture the fluidity of air and water and the way they changed with the light.
Boating was fashionable in France during the mid 19ths Century, with racing boats competing at Argenteuil because the Seine widened out into a basin which provided the broadest stretch of water in the Paris region. Linked to Paris by train, Argenteuil attracted many competitors and on Sundays crowds of people came to stroll by the river and watch the races.
